Greenfield - Raymond S. Dorhamer passed away peacefully at home on August 17, 2017, in Greenfield, MA.
He was born on September 9, 1922, in Fairhaven, MA.
Ray graduated from Turners Falls High School in 1941, where he played baseball and tennis. He also played on the Montague City Blues baseball team. After high school, he worked at the Montague Rod & Reel Shop.
Ray enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces and served from 1943 to 1946. Following his service in the military, he worked for the Greenfield Tap & Die.
Ray met Barbara Shippey at the wedding of their friends Eunice and Bebe Parenteau. They married in 1955 and celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary last year.
He was a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and retired in 1987. After retiring, he traveled extensively with his wife. Australia was his favorite destination, and he dubbed himself “the Kangaroo Kid.” He had a wonderful sense of humor, gave everyone nicknames, and was an avid letter writer.
A lifelong Red Sox fan, he celebrated his 90th birthday at Fenway park with his three daughters.
He was predeceased by his parents Frank L. and Martha M. (Croutworst) Dorhamer and his sister Irene (Dorhamer) Bliven. He is survived by his wife Barbara (Shippey) Dorhamer; his daughter Karen Dorhamer-Fadden and her husband Rick Fadden of Stow, MA; his daughter Debbie Dorhamer Ehrmann and her husband Jon Ehrmann of Sudbury, MA; his daughter Diane Dorhamer of Potomac Falls, VA; his grandchildren Amy Fadden of Amherst, MA, Scott Ehrmann of Sudbury, MA, and Hannah Ehrmann of Corpus Christi, TX. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Jack Kirkwood, his sister-in-law Alice Hinkley, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 22, 2017, at 11am at Kostanski Funeral Home 220 Federal St. Burial will follow at Center Cemetery in Bernardston. A calling hour will be from 10-11am at the funeral home.
