Obituary

Stephan Smith, 74, of Oakman Street in Turners Falls, died Thursday 9/14/23 after collapsing at home.  He was born in New Rochelle, NY on March 12, 1949.  The son of Leopold and Lillian (DiNunzio) Smith, Stephan attended local schools in New Rochelle and was a graduate of Blessed Sacrament High School.  He continued his education and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from Iona University in New Rochelle, NY where he was a member of the crew team.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Peace Church in Turners Falls where he was a member of the choir.  A devoted father and grandfather he participated in activities with his son’s Boy Scout Troop and always supported & was present for their sports activities.  For the past 6 months , he enjoyed babysitting  for his 6 month old grandson Jack “big guy” on a weekly basis.  
Stephan was an insurance agent at the A.H. Rist Insurance Company in Turners Falls for many years until his retirement.  Prior to that he was a marketing representative for Aetna Insurance.   
Stephan was a former member of the Greenfield Chamber of Commerce and was a long term member of the Knights of Columbus in Turners Falls.  He was an avid golfer and served on the board of directors at the Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club in Turners Falls.  At Thomas’ he was a club champion,  a senior club champion, played on the K of C & the mixed league and was proud of the seven holes in one he made throughout his golfing career.
Stephan enjoyed golfing with his beloved wife, Jane on their many cross country adventures and his favorite course was Emerald Canyon in Parker, AZ.  They also hiked and explored national parks and made many new life long friends along the way.  Their most recent passion and fun event was riding their e-bikes around the area.  
Stephan enjoyed fishing, even though he was not always successful, and loved to eat Italian food & lobster.  After exploring the Bourbon Trail in Kentucky he enjoyed an occasional bourbon barrel aged beer.
Besides his beloved wife of thirty eight years, Jane (Kowalski) Smith, Stephan leaves a son, Jonathan Smith (Kathryn} of Rohnert Park, CA; a daughter, Sara Tine (Jack) of Unionville, CT; two granddaughters, Kinsley and Finley Smith; a grandson, Jack Tine IV; two sisters, Ann Donato and her husband Bill of Lake Arial, PA and Margaret Herlihy of Glenn Falls, NY; a brother, Robert Smith and his wife Patti of Ocala, FL; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. 
Stephan was predeceased by his parents, Leopold and Lillian Smith and his brother-in-law, Frank Herlihy and dear cousin Deanna Kinneman.  
A Memorial Mass will be held Friday 9/22 at 11am at Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh Street, Turners Falls, MA.  A gathering will be held at Thomas Memorial Golf Club, 29 Country Club Lane, Turners Falls immediately following the Mass.  
Calling hours will be held Thursday evening (9/21) from 4-6pm at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 FEDERAL STREET, GREENFIELD. 
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation, in memory of Stephan, to the Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club, 29 Country Club Lane, Turners Falls, MA 01376 to help support endeavors that were very important to him.  Stephan was a great guy who was loved by all for his upbeat, friendly personality and who was always available to lend a helping hand.  He was loved and will be missed.
