Richard J. Stratford, 88, died Saturday March 26, 2022, at Care One in Northampton. He was born in Leverett August 1, 1933, the son of William and Gladys (Simmons) Stratford. He attended Leverett and Amherst schools and was a lifelong Leverett resident.
He was a Korean War Veteran serving his country from May 12, 1953, to March 22, 1955. After his military service, he married the love of his life.
Richard worked logging with his father (Bill Stratford) in his early working years. Richard drove school bus for years and is fondly remembered by former children. He was also a truck driver for many area contractors, retiring from Lane Construction in 1996.
He was a member of and a deacon at Moore’s Corner Church under Pastor Larry Riddle’s leadership.
He enjoyed his family tremendously and adored his wife. He loved singing hymns and often had a shirt pocket full of marshmallows. He was a big fan of the New England Patriots.
Richard leaves his children, James (Susan), Thomas, Jane (Edward), William (Lisa), Leslie (Daniel); seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; a sister; Mary of Florida.
Besides his parents Richard was predeceased by his wife of 66 years the former Shirley Wheeler on February 2, 2022, and his siblings; Stanley, Ruth, James, William, Joseph, and Edith.
Services will be private.
