Mary K. Dillon-Sikoski, 65, died peacefully after a long, courageous battle with brain cancer. Born in Springfield, Mary was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary (McCarthy) Dillon.
She grew up in Greenfield and has lived in Turners Falls for the past 20+ years. She attended Holy Trinity School and was a graduate of Greenfield High School. While attending high school, she was known as a track athlete and worked at the Farren Care Center and Greenfield Medical Center to get a better idea of the field of nursing.
Mary graduated from St. Anselm's College and received her Bachelor's of Science in Nursing. During her senior year in college, she was accepted as an honorable student nurse and was given the opportunity to work in Washington D.C. Later, Mary earned her Master's Degree in 1985. After college, she worked at Mass General and the VA Medical Center in Boston for two years before transferring to VA hospital in Northampton. Later, she retired after 35+ years in nursing.
As a young child, Mary fell in love with the ocean after vacations to Groton Long Point and Point-o-Woods. Mary always said she was most at peace when she sat with her feet in the sand listening to the ocean waves with a book in hand. Into adulthood, the Cape held tremendous memories, as she bounced from Bourne to the tip of Provincetown with her children. Mary encouraged her children to have fun. On one memorable afternoon, she even snuck around the Kennedy beaches with her family. She had the most contagious laugh that could make an entire room gasp for air. Mary was a kind-hearted, selfless individual who always put others' needs before her own.
She leaves four children: Edward L. Sikoski Jr., Margaret Dillon Sikoski, Kathleen N. Sikoski and Joseph J. Sikoski; a grandson Carter J. Sikoski, with whom Mary had a special bond. The two were always on an adventure or lounging on the couch with a good book. She also leaves behind two brothers, Thomas and his wife Sue, James, and his wife Ann; a sister Shelia Hanlon; a beloved "agent" Aunt Shelia McCarthy, many nieces and nephews, and her lifelong friend and former husband Edward L. Sikoski Sr.
