Margaret Cranson Obituary

Margaret Cranson, age 67, passed away on April 14, 2026, at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts. Born on October 21, 1958, in Northampton, MA, Margaret was a woman of vibrant spirit and profound, hidden strength. Her children choose to remember her through the lens of her greatest loves and the courage that defined her life.

Long before her struggle with mental health took its toll, Margaret was a mother who lived for her children. She spent hours lost in play with them, creating a world of joy that lives on in their memories. She was a woman who loved the ocean and found her greatest peace in the water. A true foodie at heart, she believed no outing was complete without a meal—specifically one featuring a mountain of hot fries smothered in ketchup. She possessed a unique, fearless spirit, once famously proving her grit by catching a feral cat with nothing but a paper bag.

To those who saw only her illness, she was a patient; but to her three children, she was a hero. Her final act of motherhood remains her most powerful: in a moment of extraordinary clarity and selfless love, she recognized her own limitations and made the heartbreaking choice to take her children to safety. That sacrifice, born of a love that spanned her whole being, gave her children the future she knew they deserved.

For many years, Margaret was a resident at MissionCare at Holyoke, the successor to the program at the Farren Care Center. Her family wishes to extend a special and heartfelt thank you to the staff at both facilities. Your compassion and specialized care provided her with dignity and stability during her long struggle, and for that, we are eternally grateful.

Margaret is finally free from the constraints of her illness and the shadows of her past, perhaps swimming in a vast ocean or enjoying a quiet meal in the sun. She was preceded in death by her father, Leon B. Cranson; her mother, Elizabeth Ann O'Connor; and her brother, Robert L. Cranson.

She is survived by her three children: Leon Cranson of Northampton, MA; Jamie Smejkal of Buckland, MA; and Richard Schader of Wentzville, MO. She also leaves behind two grandchildren, Alexander Smejkal (19) and Benjamin Smejkal (10), both of Buckland, MA, who will forever carry her bravery and her love with them.
