Obituary

Margaret E. (Hale) Cowan, 81, of Hillside Road, Montague passed away peacefully on September 8th, 2023 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Greenfield, MA on December 10th, 1941, the daughter of Ralph and Catherine (Cormie) Hale.
Margaret married William (Bill) Cowan on July 31st ,1959. They celebrated 61 years of marriage before his passing in 2021.
Margaret attended Greenfield Schools. Margaret was a homemaker and stayed at home raising her three children. She also spent many years doing home daycare and touched many children’s lives. Margaret then went to work at Hillcrest Elementary School where she continued her love of working with children. Margaret also met her very special friend Charlotte Chelova, while working at Hillcrest, who she called her angel friend. Margaret’s greatest love was her family, her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Margaret and Bill enjoyed camping and the beach and shared that with all the kids. They also loved car rides and traveling.
Margaret loved all kinds of crafting and created beautiful scrapbooks full of family memories, including her dream trip to Scotland. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and dance recitals. Margaret’s favorite holiday was Christmas, and she was known for having presents piled so high you could barely see the tree. She was a giver and loved to make everyone happy, that gave her joy.
Margaret enjoyed gardening and feeding the hummingbirds that returned every year. She would sit in her beautiful gazebo watching them.
Besides her parents, Margaret was predeceased by her husband Bill and brothers Edward, Fred, Leon, Charles, Robert and Alan.
Among her survivors, Margaret leaves two sons William Cowan Jr. and wife Cheryl, Gary Cowan and wife Lori, a daughter Catherine Zellmann and her husband John. She leaves five grandchildren, Gary Cowan II and his wife Shawna, Derrick Zellmann and his wife Jessica, Alayna Zellmann and partner Ted Devlin, Lauryn Stafford and her husband Brandon and Jennifer Cowan. Seven great grandchildren, Jason and Haley Cowan, Brynn MacLeay, John-David and Isla Zellmann, Noah Stafford and Kingston Salom. She leaves her two sisters Louise Spondre and Linda Charest and her brother David Hale. Margaret also leaves many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday September 13th at noon at Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square, Turners Falls. Calling hours will be held Wednesday morning from 10 AM until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Beaver Meadow Cemetery in Leyden, MA.
