Katherine "Bonnie" DeMello, 78, of Garnett Hill Road in Athol died Wednesday 10/13/21 at home. She was born on April 24, 1943 in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Herbert and Ellen (Murphy) Yorke.
Bonnie knew her way around all the local bingo halls. Wherever there was laughter you could be sure she was the center of it with her laugh that lit up a room. She was known around Brooklyn for how hard she punched, but she was known around here for how hard she loved. Bonnie treasured her friendships. She loved her family fiercely and truly lived her life her own way.
Among her survivors, Bonnie leaves a son, George DeMello and his fiancé Michelle Guerin of Greenfield; a daughter, Jeanine Viencek and her husband Patrick Viencek of Athol; brother William Yorke of Brooklyn, NY; four grandchildren, Gabrielle Sheehan and her husband Michael Sheehan; Andrew DeMello; Patrick Viencek II and his wife Jordan Viencek; and Kaleigh DeMello; one great grandchild, Kayden Viencek; and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves a bonus daughter, Cindy Kilgallon.
Besides her parents, Bonnie was predeceased by two sisters, Patricia Murray and Mary Jamieson.
And in her words: "Please don’t cry because I'm gone, instead be happy I was here. (Or maybe you can cry a little bit. After all, I have passed away) Today I am happy and at peace. I hope heaven can handle all this."
A graveside service will be held Thursday 10/21 at 1pm at Calvary Cemetery in Greenfield.
Calling hours will be held Thursday 10/21 from 11am-1pm at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal Street, Greenfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Care Central GVNA.
