Joseph Christopher Schab, 75, of The Arbors died Thursday 6/9/22 at the Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield with his daughter, Heather, by his side. He was born in Montague on July 24, 1946, the son of Joseph and Evelyn (McGrail) Schab. He was a graduate of Turners Falls High School Class of 1964. Joe continued his education, attending Greenfield Community College and Central State College in Iowa which he attended on a full football scholarship as their star quarterback.
He was employed at Cleary Jewelers in Greenfield, Kennametal, Montague Machine and the Town of Greenfield.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Peace Church, serving as a Eucharistic Minister.
Joe was a fighter, bravely beating the odds of many medical conditions. He was a survivor, beating stage four cancer and 23 other critical conditions and didn’t even give up on his deathbed.
He was an avid golfer and gardener and was always proud of his prize tomatoes and peppers.
Joe married his beloved wife Jane in August of 1968, spending fifty four years together before she predeceased him in 2015.
Surviving family members include his Daughter Heather of South Portland Maine, his Godson and nephew Todd Abbott of NJ, a niece Jennifer Eber of NH, and nephew Christopher Abbott of West Springfield.
A Memorial Mass will be held Friday 6/24 at 10am at Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh Street, Turners Falls. Burial will follow at St. Anne’s Cemetery in Turners Falls.
There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Franklin County.
