John A. Greene Obituary
John A. Greene, 79, of Davis St. passed away Thursday May 15, 2025 at home. He was born in Greenfield on December 16, 1945 the son of Kenneth W. and Mary (Hodgman) Greene. He attended local schools and graduated from Turners Falls High School Class of 1963. John also attended GCC where he received a degree in Fire Science.
He was a US Army Warrant Officer veteran serving in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot. During his service in Vietnam, he received the following medals and citations: Army Aviater Badge, 4th Armored Division Aviation Safety Award, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Cross of Valentry and the National Defense Service Medal. In January of 1966, he was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in connection with military operations against a hostile force.
John was a HVAC Systems Operator at Smith College for 29 years from 1983 until his retirement in 2012. Previously he had worked at Eaglebrook School and Franklin Medical Center. John started his firefighter career in Gill. He later joined Montague Center Fire Department where he was a member for 35 years, serving as Chief from 1986-2015. He developed and ran the Franklin County Firefighter Recruit Training Program, was a member of the Northwest Massachusetts Incident Management Team, Tri State Fire Mutual Aid Team, Western Mass Fire Chiefs Association and was accredited by the state as a Certified Fire Chief. John also taught Fire Science at GCC and was a member of the Franklin County Radio Control Club.
He was a member of the Episcopal Church of Saints James and Andrew, member of the Barnabas Guild, the Property Committee and served as an usher. John served as both a Junior and Senior Warden at the former St. James Episcopal Church.
John leaves his wife of 46 years the former Karen Finck, his daughters; Jillian McGrath and her husband Jeremiah of Westfield and Allyson Chabot and her husband Thomas of Gill along with his grandchildren; Raeghan McGrath, Jameson McGrath, Justin Chabot and Noah Chabot plus several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his sister, Roberta LaPan and his brother, Kenneth Greene Jr.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2025 at 10:00 AM at the Episcopal Church of Saints James and Andrew, 8 Church Street, Greenfield, MA. Burial will follow at Our Lady of Czestochowa Cemetery, Turners Falls Rd, Montague, MA.
