Jean Vera Sweeney, 88, of Lake Pleasant died peacefully at home Friday 7/31/26. Jean was born October 10th, 1937, in Leverett, the daughter of Mildred (Groves) and William Carey. Jean was a graduate of New Salem Academy.
She was married on July 27th, 1956, to Melvin E. Sweeney.
Jean was in food services at UMass for many years, she also worked in Athol as a seamstress. She enjoyed spending her time with her grandkids (31 in total!). She loved to take care of everyone and would help anyone that she could.
Among her survivors, Jean leaves 4 children, daughter Vanessa Rogers and her husband Richard; son Micheal Sweeney; daughter Lorie Reinerth and her husband Christopher, and son William Sweeney; 8 grandchildren, Christopher and his wife Gwen, Kamri, Mikey, Kirsten, and Samantha Sweeney, Caity Tsoleridis and her husband Kosta; Wayne Douglas and Daniel Howard; 19 great grandchildren, Damon Blake, Jared, Shannon, and Regan Douglas, Jazzlyn and Jazelle Gonzalez, Luke and Drew Sweeney, Kosta, Niko, and Mak Tsoleridis, Leo Howard, Isaiah Sweeney and Xander Stanford, Paisley and Everette Sweeney, Ryan Aulisio, Taji-llan Hudson, Sariah Sweeney and 2 great grandchildren, Braxton and Carter Blake.
She also leaves behind her siblings; Ricky Carey, Kathy Boron and her husband David, Sylvia Carey, Karen Fairman; In-law siblings, Donna and John Heath, Diane Elliot and Beverly Duplessi.
Besides her beloved husband of 51 years, the late Melvin E. Sweeney, Jean was predeceased by her son Chris Sweeney; granddaughters Sarina and Angela Sweeney; great grandson Christian E. Wills; sister Joan and husband Tillie Burnett; brother Robert Carey Sr; brothers-in-law Richard Fairman, Thomas and David Sweeney; sister-in-law Caroline Marquis and husband Ray and brother-in-law Fred Elliot.
Calling Hours will be held on Saturday 8/8 from 10am-12pm at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Sq., Turners Falls.
A graveside service will follow at 12:30pm at Plainview Cemetery in Leverett. We encourage everyone to wear Jeans favorite color, green.
