Irving “Sonny” G. Bassett, age 84, passed away Thursday October 19, 2023, at home with his family following a brief illness.
Sonny was born July 22, 1939, in Greenfield, MA, the son of the late Irving M. Bassett and Edith (Hall Bassett) Hale and stepfather Dayton Hale. He lived his younger years in Leyden, MA before moving to Bernardston, MA. He attended Powers Institute then Pioneer Regional High School.
Sonny met the love of his life Joan (Therrien) Bassett the Summer of 1957. They married on August 9, 1958, and just celebrated their 65th anniversary.
He was a machinist for Bendix as well as for other companies. Sonny was a master carpenter, having built many homes in the area.
Sonny loved to hunt every year with his brothers and friends. He enjoyed fishing and tending his vegetable garden every summer. His love of carpentry can be seen throughout his home. He loved crafting things for his family.
Sonny is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Joan (Therrien) Bassett; his five daughters; Susan Jefferies and her husband Bryan of Telford, PA, Donna Bassett of Brentwood, CA, Pamela Leger and her husband Steve of Orange, MA, Mary Szelewicki of Lake Pleasant, MA, and Katherine Bassett and her partner Dave Arsenault of Shelburne, MA; brothers Dean Bassett and his partner Sandy of Turners Falls, MA, Robert Bassett and his partner Karen of Greenfield, MA, and Dayton (Daty) Hale and his wife Sue of Bernardston, MA. He also leaves 12 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and many cousins and nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents Sonny was predeceased by his two sisters Katheryn Bassett, Shirley Moores and her husband Russell, and their daughter Susan Moores.
There will be no calling hours. The family will have a Celebration of Life at a later date.
