Hilda M. (Towne) (Carey) Williams, 99, of Dudleyville Road died Wednesday 7/10/24 at home.  She was born in Leverett on May 30, 1925, the daughter of Henry and Ruth Towne. Hilda attended the one room schoolhouse at Moores Corner and Amherst schools.

Her first job was cleaning house for the neighbors. She was paid in eggs from their farm. She was a housekeeper for the University of Massachusetts in Amherst for many years until her retirement.

She loved spending time with her beloved family & friends. Also, loved spending winters in FL for the past 34 yrs. Her passion was knitting, crocheting, reading & word searches. She played several musical instruments by ear.

Among her survivors, Hilda leaves two sons, Clarence “Dewey” Carey (Peggy) and Ralph “Chucky” Carey III (Debbie), all of Leverett; two daughters, Sandra Bardsley Chaisson of Athol, MA and Shelley (Carey) Snow (Mark) of Leverett; 27 grandchildren and great grandchildren; four stepchildren, Terry Wiliams (Michelle) of Granby, Verne Williams (Melissa) of Montague and Rebecca Hulse; and several nieces and nephews.

Hilda was predeceased by her first husband, Ralph Carey, Jr.; her second husband, Allen Williams; her stepmother Lina Towne; and her siblings, Evelyn Slobody, Lillian Black, Eunice Ball and Elmer Towne; a stepsister Elma Russo and a stepbrother Wayne LaClaire. 

Funeral services will be held Monday 7/15 at 10 am at the North Leverett Baptist Church, N. Leverett Road, Leverett, MA.  The burial will be private.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Fisher Home, 1165 N. Pleasant St, Amherst, MA 01002 or No. Leverett Baptist Church or Moores Corner Church.
