Herbert Hohengasser Obituary

Herbert Franz Hohengasser age 93 of 3 Knapp Avenue Greenfield, died on August 31, 2021.  He was born in Greenfield on November 26, 1927, the son of Emil and Maria Julia (Schali) Hohengasser. He was a life-long resident of Greenfield. He graduated from Holy Trinity School and Greenfield High School in 1945. He also graduated from the Fenway School of Mechanical Optics in Boston. He served in the Navy in WW 2 on Samar in the Philippine Islands. He was a plumber for 46 years, forming Hohengasser Plumbing and Heating Inc. in 1965 and operating it until his retirement in 1995. He continued to be a plumbing inspector for the towns of Greenfield, Wendell and Montague. He was a very active member of the Franklin County Master Plumbers Association being one of the founders in 1965. On November 16, 2017, Herb was honored by the Franklin County Plumbers Association for being the oldest, active plumbing inspector in the Commonwealth. He was a life member and Past Commander of Lt. John J. Galvin Post 81 of the American Legion in 1958.  He served on the Franklin-Hampshire Area Board of the Department of Mental Health for several years. He was an avid skier and yachtsman and a member of the Brattleboro Ski Patrol for 18 Years. After retirement he undertook doing an extensive genealogy of the Hohengasser family, back to their roots which included several trips to Austria to do research.  Participating in the Honor Flight to Washington D. C. in 2018 with other World War II Veterans was a special milestone for him. He is survived by his wife Yolande, three sons, Dennis A. of Taunton Mass., Daniel A. of Greenfield and  David E. of Greenfield, and two daughters, Ann Woodard of Agawam, Mass and Mary E. Powers of  Montague, two step children, Daniel R. Turner of Sunderland and Dennis E. Turner of Greenfield  and five grandchildren, Mark Hohengasser of Berne, New York,  John Hohengasser of Berlin Mass.,  Cheryl George of Northfield and Joseph Hohengasser of Templeton MA and Jeffery Woodard of Phoenix, AZ, as well as four great grandchildren.  He leaves his sisters, Irmgard Petersante of Greenfield and Elaine Lundquist of San Antonio Texas and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Emil, and Ernest and sisters Hilda Dejoy, Bertha Bourget, Gladys Rossmeisl, Marguerite Yestramski, his grandsons Nathan Currier and Robert Hohengasser and his step daughter Deborah Turner. There are no calling hours. A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, September 22 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at Terrazza, 244 Country Club Road, Greenfield. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made in his honor to the Alliance for the Mentally Ill, 324A Springfield Street, Agawam, Mass. 01001.
