Obituary

Frank W. “Sonny” Collis died Tuesday July 25, 2023 at home, with family at his side. He was born in Turners Falls July 8, 1943 the son of Edgar and Genevieve (Wojtkowski) Collis. He attended Turners Falls High School.
Sonny retired as a machinist having worked for GTD, Montague Machine and Rule Tool/ Kennametal. He also worked for Cowles Lumber.
Sonny enjoyed day trips with friends to beaches, festivals, parades, waterfalls, various New England tourist activities and a yearly bus trip to Saratoga racetrack. He also competed in the Demolition Derby at Franklin County Fair for several years. A favorite pastime was cruising the backroads on his minibike or in his convertible, with a box of treats for the local dogs. At times he even cruised with the local dogs! He especially loved driving through farm areas, visiting with farmers, picking up local produce and sharing it with many friends and family. He also enjoyed visiting pumpkin fields with his dear friend, Tim Ollari.
Most special were the days he spent boating on the Connecticut River. He took delight in seeing local wildlife and scenery that could only be viewed from the river. No trip was complete without going up to "Gilligan's Island", having a picnic, taking a dip off a rope swing, running into Carol & Randy Murdoch and cousins, Dana, Aurora and Shane Wojtkowski. Sonny's favorite boat companions were his sister, Debbie, nieces Laurie and Abby. With no children of his own, Sonny had a close relationship with his niece Laurie, her husband Tim and their daughter Abby. Family was very important to him, and he never missed a milestone or holiday. In addition to his immediate family, he was blessed to have a place in the families of others, especially the Ollari-Mailloux, Jarvis and McLellan families.
Affectionately known as the Mayor of Erving by both town employees and locals, Sonny was a bit of a prankster. Rarely a day passed without him stopping at the town yard or fire station to engage in some friendly banter or battles with silly string, super soakers or water balloons. He also spread his charm with the Erving PD bringing them cold or hot drinks, when they were on outdoor details. And always brought a laugh to the staff at the Senior Center. These “town employees” were so much more, they were his friends and a large part of his life.
In his last days he had the opportunity to tell many of the people mentioned, that he loved them using all the sincerity he could muster. Sonny's generosity and humor will be missed by many, leaving a void in his amazing community.
He leaves behind his sister Mary Ann Grybko (Richard) of Colorado Springs, CO and Debra Markley (Walter Wisniewski) of Gill and many nieces and nephews from Nebraska, Colorado, South Dakota and Greenfield, MA. Also, his beloved cat Sunny Girl, and dear family friend and support, Philip Wonkka.
Calling hours will be held Saturday August 5, 2023 from 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM at Kostanski Funeral Home 1 Kostanski Square Turners Falls.
Burial will follow in Our Lady of Czestochowa Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Sonny’s name may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105 or to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Regional Dog Shelter, 10 Sandy Lane Turners Falls, MA 01376.
