Dr. William Francis Doyle, 88 years old, a testament to a life well lived, passed away at home on February 1, 2025. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, physician, proud veteran, and a pillar of his community.  
He was born on September 15, 1936 in Boston, Massachusetts to Irish immigrant parents, William Doyle and Elizabeth (Curley) Doyle. 
He grew up in Somerville, Massachusetts and graduated at the top of his class and as a track star from Somerville High School in 1954. He attended his beloved Alma mater, Boston College, and graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor of science degree in Biology. He obtained his medical degree from New York Medical College. He did a rotating internship at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Boston where he met a sassy young nursing student, Doris Goguen. They would go on to celebrate 63 years of marriage. 
He was drafted into the service by the U.S. Army in 1962 and completed four years of pathology residency at Walter Reed Army Hospital. He was Chief Resident of Pathology from 1967-1969. His proudest military achievement was being chosen as part of the medical team that cared for former president and 5 star general Dwight D. Eisenhower in his final days and participating in the presidential autopsy. In 1969, he was transferred as Chief of Anatomical Pathology to Letterman General Army Hospital on the Presidio of San Francisco. In 1974, he retired from the Army after 11 years of service achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. 
He moved his family across the country and settled in Greenfield, Massachusetts to raise his family. He was a staff pathologist at Franklin Medical Center from 1974 until 2001. He also worked as a consulting pathologist at several local hospitals, including Farren Hospital, Athol Memorial Hospital and finally retiring from medicine in 2016 after 9 years of director of laboratory services at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.
Aside from a proud and outstanding professional career, community service was an important part of his life’s mission. He served the community as the Franklin County Medical Examiner for over 30 years. Using his medical expertise he served on the Greenfield Board of Health for 10 years, retiring as Chairman. He was an elected member of the Soldiers Memorial Trustee. He was instrumental in establishing the Vietnam Memorial Wall at the Veterans mall in 2005. He served on the Board of Directors of Franklin County’s YMCA in Greenfield for several years. He was a passionate advocate for the compassionate treatment of veterans especially Vietnam war ERA.  He was a longtime communicant of Holy Trinity Church in Greenfield and a proud, longtime, member of the Greenfield Country Club. Bill also volunteered for Meals on Wheels for many years. 
His proudest accomplishment was his marriage to Doris and being father of five daughters and eight grandchildren. He loved to drive around town in his iconic yellow Volkswagen Beetle with his vanity license plate “GOLF MD”
He leaves behind his beloved wife Doris and his five daughters, Jayne Trosin (Michael) of Sunderland, Joyce Doyle of Florida, Jeremy Johnston (John) of Vermont, Jacquelyn Doyle of Greenfield and Janis Doyle (Gary) of Montague; eight grandchildren, Matthew (Zoe) Trosin, Courtney Shanahan (Michael), Jack Trosin, Kiera and Ryan Johnston, Savannah Doyle  Donahue (Jacob) , Riley and Ricky Smith; two great grandchildren, Hazel and Henry; two sisters, Patricia Walsh and Anne Corcoran, as well as several nieces and nephews. 
A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, February 7 at 10am at Holy Trinity Church, 133 Main Street, Greenfield. Burial will follow with military honors at Calvary Cemetery. 
Calling hours will be held Thursday afternoon from 3-5pm at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal Street, Greenfield. 
A reception will follow at Terraza restaurant.
