Betty J. (Weake) McClelland Obituary
Betty J. (Weake)McClelland passed away peacefully at home on September 14, 2024, at the age of 98. She was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on May 25, 1926, to Edward and Ruth (Laming) Weake.
As part of the WWII U.S. Cadet nursing program, Betty graduated from Hartford Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. While working at the hospital, she met and then married Dr. William McClelland in September 1948. They moved to Greenfield, where she worked as a nurse in his office as he started his general surgery practice. Once the practice was established, she stayed home to help raise their children and volunteered for many organizations over the years.
She played tennis, loved walking the beach at Cape Cod yearly and cheered on the Red Sox with much enthusiasm. Betty was an avid reader and was always ready to discuss another book. However, as her eyesight diminished, she was so grateful to Perkins Library for supplying audiobooks. She enjoyed her travels in the States and Europe and even skied in the Alps. Her special treats were going to the opera and Jacob’s Pillow.
Betty’s greatest love was her family which came across in every interaction with them. Among her survivors, Betty leaves three children: Alan McClelland and his wife Patty, Jean McGowan and her husband Ed, and James McClelland and his wife, Teresa. She will be missed by her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and even one great great grandchild, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Betty will be remembered for her sense of humor, her grace, and her kindness.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, William, her sister, Hilda "Bunny" O'Connell, and an exchange student who became like her own son, Soni Oyekan.
A special thanks is given to the caregivers who were so kind to help keep her at home.
Betty’s life will be celebrated on October 19th at 11 am, at First Church of Deerfield, with Liza Knapp officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Perkins Library 175 N. Beacon St., Watertown, MA 02472 or to the Dakin Humane Society, P.O. Box 6307, Springfield, MA 01101.
