Greenfield- Arthur L. Winship, Jr., 85, passed away peacefully Wednesday July 11th, 2018 at the Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA. He was born in Turners Falls on November 17th, 1932, the son of Arthur L. and Evangeline S. (Bourget) Winship. Arthur attended local schools in Greenfield and was a graduate of Greenfield High School Class of 1951. He went on to complete a four year degree in elementary education in Alameda County, CA graduating in 1955. Arthur continued his studies in Springfield earning a certificate in the area of printing in 1966.
Arthur served in the United States Air Force, being honorably discharged in June of 1956.
He was employed at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst as a Custodial and Grounds worker for 20 years, until his retirement.
Arthur enjoyed being amongst the company of his family and many friends. He enjoyed socializing with his friends at various community events throughout Greenfield and Turners Falls that he and his late wife Madeline attended. Arthur was a phenomenal artist specializing in drawing, painting and fine craftwork. He specialized in working with slate and designing/making slate clocks. Any artist task Arthur was given he excelled at.
Arthur was predeceased by his wife, Madeline (Payson) Winship on December 19, 2010.
Among his survivors, Arthur leaves a son, Arthur L. Winship III of Webster, MA; a daughter, Debra A. Winship of Colrain; grandchildren including, Arthur S. Winship of Shreveport, LA, Jennifer M. Winship and life partner Chris B. Colon of Athol, Lisa A. Vega of Greenfield, Shannon Duggan (by marriage) of Greenfield, Treasa M. I. Glidden of Conway, John J. Niemiec III and fiance Brittany A. Buckowski of Sunderland and thirteen great-grandchildren. Arthur cherished the time he got to spend with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A memorial graveside service will be held Monday 7/23 at 9am at the Massachusetts Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001.
