Greenfield- William E. Ashby, 89, of Hastings Street died Sunday 12/23/18 at home. He was born in Framingham, MA on March 24, 1929, the son of Elizabeth Hall Sullivan.
William served in the United States Navy during the end of World War II. Following his service, William married Pauline Baker. Two years later, they had their only daughter, Arlene.
William was an officer of the Amherst Police Department under the direction of Chief Frank Heart. He later worked for the Massachusetts Highway Department.
William spent his latter years as Senior Campus Surveyor for the Design and Construction Management Department at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.
William enjoyed astronomy, exercise and especially spending time with his great grandchildren.
Among his survivors, William leaves his grandchildren, William Markert and his wife, Kirsten Leitner-Markert of Greenfield, and Alan Markert of Greenfield. He also leaves three great grandchildren, Cash, Leo, and Sylvie Leitner-Markert.
William was predeceased by his wife, Pauline (Baker) Ashby (1989) and his daughter, Arlene Ashby (2011).
A private service will be held in the spring.
