Michael J. Whiteman

Michael J. Whiteman of Cummington died on June 5, 2018.  He was born on November 18, 1937, the son of Charron E. Whiteman and Anna E. (Kelly) Whiteman.  He is predeceased by his parents and his two brothers James and Daniel.

He was a graduate of Turners Falls High School and received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.  After graduating college Michael joined the army and proudly served with the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg NC and upon his discharge was made an honorary life member of that esteemed organization.

Michael went on to earn a doctorate of juris prudence from New England School of Law and a Masters of Taxation from Boston University.

He was the manager of the Greenfield IRS office before joining the law Firm of Levy Winer and Hodus.  He also operated a solo law practice in Greenfield before rejoining the IRS as District Council in Springfield IL.  Michael returned to Western Ma and taught at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst for 29 years.  He received Professor of the year at the Isenburg School of management in 2003 and received several distinguished teaching awards.

He is survived by his wife June of Cummington and his four sons.  Michael and his wife Barbara of Becket, Daniel of Summersville WV, David of Victor WV and Peter and his wife Meagan of Peabody MA. He leaves behind 12 grandchildren and 1 great grandson.  He will also be missed by his best friend and Cousin David Kelly of Richmond NH.

Funeral service and burial will be private.
