Lyle Williams Obituary

Greenfield----Lyle F. Williams, 98, of The Arbors died Friday (7-6-18) at home.

He was born in Greenfield December 27, 1919 the son of Richard C. and Mabel A. (Fiske) Williams, was married to Mary G. Aumand Williams who predeceased his on Feb. 4, 2011. They were married 64 years.

 

He was a graduate of Greenfield High School and later graduated from Northampton Commercial College. He was employed by the Social Security Administration before joining the Maryland National Guard. He was later drafted in the US Army. He served for 4 years as a Sergeant Chief Radar Operator and saw action in Saipan, Marianas Islands, with the 501st anti aircraft battalion. In 2015 at the age of 95, he flew to Washington DC with the Honor Flight, New England Branch.

 

He was employed by Berkshire Gas Company as an assistant Manager, and the Fitchburg Gas & Electric Company as a New Business Administrator in the industrial/commercial division. He retired in 1981.

 

He was a former member of the Greenfield Kiwanis, the Gardner Rotary, and was a Corporator of the Greenfield Savings Bank.

 

He was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church and participated in many activities at the Greenfield YMCA. He was a devoted family man and enjoyed birding, gardening, fly fishing, and using the computer as a means to keep in touch with family and friends. In his later years he enjoyed oil painting.

 

He is survived by two sons; James (Bette) of Naples, FL., John (Caroline) of Phillipston, MA., and daughter Kathleen (Jeffrey) Wallace, and a son in law Robert Dewire of Pawcatuck, CT. Another daughter Mary Jean Dewire of Pawcatuck, CT. passed away in Oct. 25, 2008. He had 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves his brother Glenn of Colrain, MA., and a sister June of Northfield, MA. He was predeceased by his siblings Donald, Dana, Leslie and Shirley.

 

The family would also like to thank the staff at the Arbors who made him feel special and loved. Each employee in different ways looked after him, and gave him a wonderful home to live in for many years.

 

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Saturday (7-14-18) at 11 AM at Holy Trinity Church 133 Main St., Greenfield. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
