Greenfield--------Edward W. Banach, 94, formerly of Hillcrest Drive, Bernardston died Tuesday (5-9-17) at Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility surrounded by family.
He was born in Greenfield July 4, 1922 the son of Stanislaw and Rozalia (Krysiak) Banach. Ed attended local school and graduated from Greenfield High School. He was a WW II US Navy veteran attaining the rank of RM3c being honorably discharged in 1945.
Ed enjoyed fixing things, known as a “Jack Of All Trades” and the “Candy Man” and was everyone’s uncle, related or not. He was a member of the former White Eagles and the Thaddeus Kosciuszko Societies.
Ed was a long time member of Sacred Heart Church. He married the former Helen (Trephon) Skiathitis in 1970. She predeceased him 2015.
He was in the maintenance department at Historic Deerfield for many years.
Survivors included a brother Alexander Banach (Barbara) of Towson, MD, his step-children Angela Skiathitis of Orange, Paul (JoAnne) Skiathitis of Bernardston, MA James (Helen) Skiathitis of Bernardston, MA and their families. He also leaves several nieces and nephews including Kathy McAndrews (John) of Erving, MA, and Carol Gritz of South Deerfield, and Rosanne Engstrom (Don) of Valencia CA who were his care givers. He also leaves several great nieces and nephews.
Ed was predeceased by brothers Waclaw, Joseph, Walter, Chester and sisters Stephania and Constance.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be Friday (5-12-17) at 11am at Our Lady of Peace Church 90 Seventh St. Turners Falls with Rev. Stanley J. Aksamit, Pastor officiating. Burial will follow at Mater Dolorosa Cemetery in Greenfield. A calling hour will be held Friday (5-12-17) from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at Kostanski Funeral Home 220 Federal St. Greenfield.
