Carol Kestyn Obituary

Carol Kestyn died Saturday morning JAN 12, 2019 at home surrounded by her family. She was 83. Her sweet smile and Irish wit will be missed.
Carol Ann (Hainey) Kestyn grew up in the Olneyville West End neighborhood of Providence RI. Born on JAN 4, 1936 in Providence, she was the daughter of Julia (Lomax) and Andrew Hainey. She graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1953 where she served as class President her senior year. While studying business she would meet a young man from Greenfield and get married in MAY 1957 and leave RI. Instead she would live and raise her family in eastern MA and travel extensively with her airline employed husband until moving to Greenfield in 1970.
Her local career included Senior Buyer of Ladies Sportwear at Wilsons in the 70's and 80's, where she made frequent trips to the NYC garment district. Thereafter she worked at Phoenix Mutual Insurance supervising dental claims processing. She also worked at Shawmut Bank. In later years she worked with handicapped kids as a para-professional in the Greenfield Schools system.
She was involved with the Franklin County ARC for many years where she and husband Charles began a Christmas party for ARC clients hosted by the Greenfield Elks - an event that continues to this day.
Carol was a patriot and loved America and politics. However, growing up with the racism of seeing signs like "Irish Need not Apply" formed her perspective. She despised liars, cheats and injustice but she still held fast to hope.
Carol loved the theater more than almost anything and attended several Broadway shows every year.
She loved her family, ice cream and warm weather. She loved the Red Sox almost never missing a game with the girls of the hi-rise where she lived. She played bingo and card games with them too.
She remained close to her childhood friends Marlene, Elena, Tina and Annette and their husbands throughout her life getting together at least once a year.
She leaves Charles, her husband of 61 years and their four children, Kevin of Northampton MA, David of Rochester NY, Paul and his wife Lynda of Turners Falls and Sandra and her husband AJ Lenois of Greenfield. She leaves five grandchildren, Josh, Alex, Samantha, Brittany, Jimmy and Ben and 3 great-grandchildren Hannah, Zavier and Matthew. She also leaves a brother Richard Hainey and his wife Flo of Warwick, RI. She was pre-deceased by grandchild Adam Kestyn, sister Dorothy Pichette and her 2 brothers Leo Hainey and Donald Hainey, all of RI.
