Welcome to the memorial page for

Roger Smith

September 5, 1933 ~ September 2, 2017 (age 83) 83 Years Old

Roger Howard Smith, 83 of 14 East Cleveland Street died Saturday 9/2/2017, three days shy of his 84th birthday following a long period of failing health.  He was born in Deerfield September 5, 1933, the son of Howard and Sylvia (Butler) Smith.

He attended Deerfield schools and graduated from Deerfield Academy class of 1952. Roger went on to join the US Army, serving during the Korean War.   Upon his return from the Army he worked briefly for the former B & M Railroad.   He was then employed for many years at Famous Bill's Restaurant and Deerfield Academy.

He enjoyed reading and religiously completed two crossword puzzles daily.   He also enjoyed taking walks, fishing and playing cribbage with his son.  For many years he was a private care taker of a property in Deerfield where he loved to grow beautiful rose bushes.  He was a NY Giants and NY Yankees fan, however, was sure to teach his children that the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox were superior teams and encouraged them to be loyal to New England teams.   He enjoyed betting on games with his children, but no bets over 25 cents.   One of his greatest joys was spending time with his Grand Dogs and he always arrived for visits with pockets full of dog biscuits. He was also a member of the Elks Club.

Roger leaves his son, Robert of Greenfield and his daughters Heidi Haas of Millers Falls and Karin McDonald of Greenfield.   He also leaves his grandson Michael Tombs of Millers Falls.

He was predeceased by his wife of 33 years, Carol Ann as well as his parents, his twin brother Robert and brother Kenneth.

A private family graveside service will be held on September 16th at Calvary Cemetery.   A celebration of life will be held at Terrazza Ristorante on September 16th from 1 pm to 3 pm.

In honor of his love for dogs, the family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Franklin County Sheriff's Department Regional Dog Shelter, 10 Sandy Lane,  Turners Falls,  MA 01376
