Robert "Bob" L. Thompson, 78, of Greenfield died January 7, 2018. From his birth to his death on Sunday he drew people into his life with his kindness, humor, and a bit of stubbornness. He is a native of Greenfield and the only son of Leonard and Beatrice (LeBaron) Thompson. He was educated in the Greenfield public schools and graduated from Nasson College in Maine. He spent five years in a bank executive program in Boston and then worked as a salesman.

On June 5, 1971 he was married to the former Susan VanDerpoel at United Methodist Church in Chicopee.

Bob worked for 32 years at the Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance, serving as the Assistant Director for Programs up until his retirement. Throughout his career he was known for treating people with dignity and respect, and in 1986 received the department's Compassion Award. He was enthusiastic about his work and about the people he met and worked with.

Bob enjoyed golf, and was a member of the Greenfield Country Club for several decades. He was an avid reader, a dedicated volunteer at the Greenfield Public Library, and a member of the Friends of the Greenfield Public Library as well. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, playing cards with friends and family, and horse racing.

He leaves his beloved wife Susan; his daughters Cheryl and her husband Jason Kundek of Breinigsville, PA; and Lori Holmes and her husband Christopher Holmes of Carlsbad, CA; three grandchildren, Alexandra Kundek, Aimee Kundek, and Caleb Kundek; as well as extended family and several close family friends.

In keeping Bob's wishes there will be no funeral services. Memorial gifts can be made to the Friends of the Greenfield Public Library, 402 Main Street, Greenfield and Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, 97 N Hatfield Rd, Hatfield.MA 01038
