Norma Sweeney, 70, of Belchertown passed quietly at home on August 19. Daughter of the late Norman and Lucille (nee Rivet) Sweeney, Norma was a native of Turners Falls. She graduated from Turners' schools and remained there for more than 20 years while raising her family. A former teacher’s aide at Sheffield and secretary at the Arts Council in Greenfield, Norma retired from UMass Amherst after 20 years of service split between offices on the main campus and the president's office in Hadley. She enjoyed going to Maine -- a childhood vacation spot, loved lobster rolls and fried whole-belly clams, liked to watch NASCAR (mostly Jeff Gordon), was proud of her children and grandchildren, and always looked forward to a laugh with one or more of her high school crew.

Norma is survived by her children Jeff (Jodi) Kocsis of Vernon, VT, and Deb Kocsis of West Hartford, CT, as well as two exceptional grandkids, Lilia and Noel Kocsis, also of Vernon. She leaves behind brothers Bob (Ceal) of Tolland, CT, and James (Lorraine) Sweeney of North Carolina, and aunts Claire Baker of Greenfield and Sylvia Babcock of New Hampshire. Norma also leaves a number of wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins including Nancy Schroeder, Cindy, Patti and Shelly Rivet, as well as former husband and "personal car shopper" Steve Kocsis; and lifelong friends and unofficial red-hat ladies Dottie, Janice, Geri, Pam, Barbara, Carol and Gloria.

Funeral service will be held on Tuesday (8/30/16) at 11am at Kostanski Funeral Home 1 Kostanski Square in Turners Falls. Burial will follow in St. Anne’s Cemetery in Turners Falls.

Calling hours will be held on Monday (8/29/16) from 6pm-8pm and on Tuesday from 10am-11am at the funeral home.
