Mary Jean "Bonnie" (Sheperd) Hurd

February 7, 1950 ~ March 31, 2017 (age 67) 67 Years Old

Greenfield-Mary Jean “Bonnie” (Sheperd) Hurd, 67, of Washington Street died Friday 3/31/17 at The Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, she passed peacefully with her daughter Michelle, sister Annie, & nephew Peter by her side. She was born in Greenfield, MA on February 7, 1950, the daughter of the late Clarence and the late Eulah (Edleston) Sheperd. Mary grew up in Greenfield, MA and she was a 1968 graduate of Greenfield High School. Mary was known to most people as “Bonnie”, a nickname that was given to her when she was just a baby.  She was married to Duane Hurd on July 12, 1975, and they later had 2 children.

Mary lived with her daughter Michelle and 2 of her grandchildren Vincent and Anthony, whom she helped co-parent. Her granddaughter Saige spent every weekend with her grandma since she was a baby. Mary’s grandchildren were her world and the most important people in her life. She had very special relationships with all of her grandchildren. Mary had 6 grandchildren, however she was a surrogate grandma to many more.

Mary worked as a bookkeeper for most of her life; she worked for several social service agencies, including Dial/Self where she worked for 20+ years. In most recent years Mary had a career change and started working as a PCA for the elderly and disabled. Being the natural caregiver she was, she loved this type of work and her clients adored her.

Mary had many passions and hobbies in her life. One of her greatest passion was researching family history, she was very dedicated to and meticulous about this research. It took her on many travels and to meet many new people. She devoted a great deal of her life to this research and she loved sharing what she learned with her family. Mary was an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan and she loved talking about and watching the games with her grandsons. She was also a Green Wave fan and very much enjoyed watching her grandson’s sporting events. She also enjoyed gardening, she had the most beautiful flower gardens all around her yard. She loved the ocean and collecting seashells. Mary was also a member of the Woman of the Moose, Greenfield chapter. In support of the Woman of the Moose, she did a great deal of travelling with her dear friend Anne Harrington, which she loved.

Mary was a very caring, loving, and charitable woman. She spent her life helping people. She looked after everyone and would do anything she could to help someone in need. Throughout the years she opened her house to many people who had nowhere else to go or else just needed a safe place to go. If you needed her she was there. She did a great deal of volunteer and charity work throughout her life.

She leaves behind her husband, Duane Hurd of Greenfield, MA and her 2 children, Michelle Hurd and Joshua Hurd of Greenfield, MA. Her 6 grandchildren Vincent, Anthony, Saige, Austin, Jaiden, and Mason. She also leaves a sister Ann Honsa of New London,CT and a brother Robert and his wife Ruth of Honea Path, SC. She also leaves several nieces and nephews who loved her very much.

She was predeceased by her sister Kathleen “Trinky” Sagan, her brother David Sheperd, her brother-in-law Arthur Honsa, her brother-in-law Richard Sagan, and her sister-in-law Lynn Sheperd.
