Gloria A. (Mathey) Betters of Pleasant Street Erving passed away peacefully at Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility on May 31st. Gloria was born June 2nd 1923. She would have had her 94th birthday Friday June 2nd 2017. She fell shy by just two days. Born in Holyoke, MA the daughter of Henry L. Mathey and Agnes A. (Eichstaedt) Mathey. Her family moved to Greenfield when Gloria was 3 and to Erving when she was 9. She attended local schools and graduated from Greenfield High School class of 1941. Gloria was a stay at home mom until her son began school in 1955. She wanted to be close to home and began her career working for the Millers Falls Paper Company as a payroll clerk. The company evolved to International Paper and Gloria was very involved in the Human Resources department retiring in 1984. In her early years Gloria loved the Girl Scouts and being part of the outdoors. Gloria was very fond of the Evangelical Church in Erving where she was a member for many years.  She was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan. She very much enjoyed her Thursday night bowling league at the French King Bowling Center. She enjoyed day trips fishing with her late brother Hank on Lake Winnipesaukee. Travel was a love of Gloria’s. Her brother George lived in California, a great reason to travel across the country by car with her family in 1959. That was a month’s adventure for all. Gloria has taken trips to Hawaii and throughout Europe. But her most treasured vacations were to Cape Cod and York, Maine with her beloved husband Jim and her grandson Ryan. She was predeceased by her husband Jim. They were married 72 ½ years. She called him the love of her life. When they no longer were able to stay at home they were still together sharing the same room in Charlene Manor until Jim passed away 3 months earlier. Gloria leaves her son Gary, his wife Paula, a Grandson Ryan, his wife Jillian and three great grandchildren, Brayden, Jameson and Gavin. They brought such great joy to Gloria & Jim. She also leaves several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her three brothers George, Leonard and Henry (Hank) Mathey. At Gloria’s request there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be for both Jim & Gloria being laid to rest together for eternity June 10th at 11:00 am at the Highland Cemetery in Millers Falls.
