Carroll (Gillespie) Pettengill

Carroll Pettengill (Gillespie) of Hinsdale, NH died at home surrounded by her family, after a brief battle with cancer, Monday, October 30th. She was 86 years old.

Born in Springfield, MO on November 20th, 1930, Carroll moved with her parents, James C. and Sallie R. Gillespie, to Wingate Farm in Hinsdale, NH in 1948. She attended Northfield School for Girls and studied art at Endicott Junior College. Carroll married John C. Pettengill in 1953 and the couple settled in Greenfield, MA and raised three children.

Carroll was active in the Greenfield Junior Branch of the Franklin County Public Hospital, creating sets and scenery for their annual “Follies” variety show fundraiser. With her husband John, she was a lifelong, active member of the First Baptist Church of Greenfield, teaching Sunday school for many years and serving on many church committees and singing in the choir. Later in life she was a member of the Northfield Trinitarian Church in Northfield, MA where she and John found a new church home and sang in the choir. Carroll was a talented artist who volunteered her time to paint murals, both at the children’s wing of the Franklin County Hospital and the First Baptist Church nursery in Greenfield. Her original, annual Christmas cards are still treasured by friends and family. She was a source of love and light to all who knew her.

She is survived by John, her husband of 64 years, living at Charlene Manor in Greenfield, MA. She is also survived by her children, Peter T. Pettengill and his wife Deborra of Hinsdale, NH, Sallie Rogers Pettengill and her wife Marianne of Merrimac, MA and Samuel Gillespie Pettengill and his wife Karen of Greenfield, MA, her brother, Henry Rogers Gillespie of Leesburg, FL, her sister Alma Niemiller of Venice FL, her two grandchildren James Pettengill of Northampton, MA and Olivia Pettengill of Hinsdale NH, and her great grandchild Ozzy James Pettengill Robb and her close friend and care-giver Andrea Arnold of Greenfield, MA. She was pre-deceased by her

brother James Gillespie of Portland,OR in 2015. She also leaves many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.

A memorial service to celebrate her life is planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Trinitarian Congregational Church, 147 Main Street, Northfield, MA 01360.
