Greenfield---Carroll E. Bednarski, 86, of Congress St. died Friday 8-19-16 at Baystate Franklin Medical Center.

Carroll was born February 6, 1930 in South Deerfield, the son of Mary (Wojtkielewicz) and John Bednarski.  He graduated from Greenfield High School.  He later earned his Associate’s Degree in Civil Engineering (with Honors) from Lowell Technological Institute in 1966.

Carroll was a District Highway Civil Engineer with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Public Works.  He was responsible for a number of large highway projects in Western MA, including the creation of Interstate 91. Throughout his career Carroll received specialized training with Land Surveying, and obtained a number of other engineering certificates.  To assist with supervising highway bridge footing construction, Carroll obtained his freshwater SCUBA diving certificate.  He retired in 1991.

Carroll was an Air Force Reserve veteran, serving at the Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee as a meteorologist’s assistant.

Carroll enjoyed cooking, gardening, carpentry, golfing, skiing, collecting elephants and other figurines, the beaches of Cape Cod and the poolside of his winter residence in Florida.  Carroll’s fine craftsmanship was evident throughout his Greenfield home, which he had converted from a carriage house barn.  He liked to putter with improving his home and landscaping.  Above all, Carroll cherished his family, and took great joy in hosting family gatherings at his home through the years.

Carroll was a communicant of Holy Trinity Church in Greenfield.

He leaves two sons:  Robert Bednarski, John M. Bednarski and his wife Melissa; a daughter Gail Lawrence and her husband Robert; and his brother John F. Bednarski and his wife Elizabeth, all of Greenfield.  He also leaves eight grandchildren:  Jason, Jennifer, Christine, Kathy, Alyssa, Matthew, Jacob and Benjamin; three great grandchildren: Hinata, Aidan and Juliana, and several nieces and nephews.

Carroll was predeceased by his beloved wife Janice (Hendrick) of 48 years in 2001, and a son James in 2015.

Services will be Thursday 8-25-16 at 9:15 am from the Kostanski Funeral Home 220 Federal St. followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 am at Holy Trinity Church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Wednesday 8-24-16 from 4-6 pm at the funeral home.  A celebration of Carroll’s life will follow funeral services, at a location to be determined.  All are welcome.
