C. James Schaefer III

C. James Schaefer III, 90, of Short Hills, NJ, died, July 20, 2017. Born in Orange, NJ, he was raised in Summit, NJ and had lived in Short Hills, NJ since 1978. Mr. Schaefer was at one time, manager of foods promotion at Beech-Nut Packing Co., before joining the Dickie-Raymond direct marketing agency in New York, where he was vice president during its merger with Metromedia, Inc. in 1964. In 1969, he co-founded and was President of The DR Group, a prominent direct response agency with offices in New York, Boston and London. His company later merged with Needham Harper Worldwide, where as Executive Vice President and Board member, he participated in the widely publicized merger with two other agencies to form The Omnicom Group, Inc., at the time the world’s largest advertising agency company. Retiring from Omnicom in 1990, he remained active, including as campaign chairman and for many years, trustee of United Way of Millburn-Short Hills, and as an avid golfer and widely traveled fisherman, throughout the United States and Internationally. He was a Navy veteran and a graduate of the Amos Tuck School of Business and of Dartmouth College, where he had been class president, member of the Dartmouth Alumni Council, and president of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of New York. He was a life member of Canoe Brook Country Club, and in New York of The Lotos Club, the Dartmouth-Yale Club, and several fishing clubs. Mr. Schaefer is pre-deceased by his wife of 56 years, Eleanor Montville Schaefer. He is survived by a son Charles James Schaefer IV and his wife Elisabeth Hatab Schaefer of New York City. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2017 from 5 pm to 7 pm at the Bradley, Brough & Dangler Funeral Home, 299 Morris Ave., Summit, NJ. There will be another visitation on Friday, July 28, 2017 from 5 pm to 7 pm at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St. Greenfield, MA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 29th at 10 am at Blessed Sacrament Church, Greenfield, MA. Interment will be at the Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Schaefer’s name may be made to: St. Rose of Lima Church, 50 Short Hills Ave., Short Hills, NJ 07078.
